A Letter for Parents

Congratulations! You are the parent of a first-grader here at St. Anthony School.  You will be amazed at just how much your child will grow this year.  Most likely, your child has had the seeds of reading and writing planted, and during first grade, those seeds will grow and blossom, making your child an accomplished reader and writer!  You will see changes in your child’s thinking, as he/she becomes familiar with abstract concepts and symbols.  The changes will be dramatic – just compare a tiny seed with a full-grown sunflower! That’s the kind of growth you’ll see this year!

Ways to Help Your Child Bloom

The loveliest flowers usually have the best gardener – and that’s you!  Staying involved in your child’s education is the key to a successful year.

  • Please see that your child gets enough rest at night.  This will ensure that your child will be able to work to his/her full capacity in the classroom.

  • Please fuel your child up in the morning with a good breakfast.

  • Provide your child with a healthy snack each day.

  • All lunch money should be sent in an envelope with your child’s name on it.

  • Label all supplies, sweatshirts, and jackets.

  • Encourage your child to talk about his/her day and take time to look at your child’s work.

  • Please check over your child’s work packets.  Go over any mistakes with them.  Finish anything marked “Finish.” Praise your child for good work.

  • Read with your child.  Practice cutting and printing with your child.  This reinforces what we are trying to do in school.

  • Have your child follow through directions.  Give your child small responsibilities.  Do not give your child anything they cannot handle.

  • Please encourage your child to work in school diligently, neatly, and to best of their ability.

  • Check book bags nightly for papers, homework,  and notices.

  • All children will bring home their reading notebook each night.  Practice the reading words and/or sentences each night.

  • Check your child’s homework each night.  Sign it and return it to school the next day

  • Allow time for your child to adjust to school routines.

Here’s wishing us all a wonderful year of growth!
