Summer Reading 2009

Entering Grade 5

Over the summer, all students entering grade five must read TWO books.  In September, you will be tested on the books you have read.  Be sure to read the book carefully and be able to explain the characters and the events of the plot.  We will be completing activities to coincide with the books upon our return to school.

Everyone must read: The Bridge to Terabithia  by: Katherine Paterson

For your second book you may choose one of the following:

·        The Great Gilly Hopkins    by: Katherine Paterson

·        Maniac Magee   by: Jerry Spinelli

Along with reading the second book you must complete the following assignment:

Describe your favorite character and describe your least favorite character.  Be sure to include the following characteristics:

·                 Physical description of the character

·                 Personality traits (How does he or she behave?)

·                 Your reasons for liking or disliking the character.  Make sure that you include reasons that are supported by events that happened in the story.

Each character description should be one paragraph (8-10 sentences) in length.  These character descriptions will be collected on the first day of school.
